Love, Burns is Phil Sutton, founding member of Comet Gain, and lately of Brooklyn’s jangle poppers Pale Lights.

The name Love, Burns is derived from Hoffner Burns, Sutton’s drunkenly thought up stage name for the first Comet Gain LP “Casino Classics.”

Sutton is joined on this record by Kyle Forester (Crystal Stilts/Ladybug Transistor/ Woods) who plays most instruments on Love, Burns’ previous LPs (It Should Have Been Tomorrow, 2020, and Blue, 2024), along with Hannes Müller (The BV’s) on drums.

Special guest singer is Rachel Evans, longtime member of Comet Gain. Despite their shared CV particulars this is the first time Sutton and Evans have recorded together.

Dear Carol is based on a very short dream Sutton had where he had a chat about the state of the world with Carol White, star of Cathy Come Home, Up the Junction (the original teleplay) and Poor Cow. Sutton wrote the tune and sat on it for ages. He thought the lyrics seemed a bit conversational, the stuff of a duet. Now an American citizen, he turned to one of his favourite English singers, and old friend Rachel Evans. She said “It’s a good song, Sutton,” so the record was made.

Evans also added backing vocals to the b-side, a song about someone getting a tattoo declaring their love for their partner, called “Drawn Together.” The backing vocals were a surprise that made Sutton cry. Rachel called him a soft lad.

Limited to 300 copies on vinyl.

Love, Burns play their only UK show at Glas-Goes Pop this July 25, along with The Cords, V-Twin, The Sexual Objects, and The Pastels.

A third LP is nearly finished and should be ready late 2025/early 2026.
